Would you ever jump into the middle of the ocean in your wedding dress post-ceremony? Amy and Blake officially wed in a quaint country courthouse stateside then hosted a destination wedding in Fiji. The bride says, “After planning nearly ten different weddings with ten different color schemes in ten different locations, Blake and I finally decided that we would take away the stress of it all and plan a destination wedding. This wasn’t going to be a typical destination wedding though–it would be our wedding (or renewal of vows), our honeymoon (that we never had) and a much-needed vacation.” Photographers Malia and Stu of Malia Johnson Photography were on-hand to capture their beautiful adventure, in the water and on land.

Who’s idea was it to wed in Fiji? Since I was little girl, I always dreamt of having a Fiji honeymoon. I honestly don’t know where I ever saw Fiji, but I’ve always been in love with the culture and gorgeous landscapes. After discussing our options with Blake, we finally settled on Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa on the main island. We worked with Miss Lei and Miss Pari and could not have asked for better wedding coordinators– they truly made our dreams come true.

Tell us about the journey out to sea for the photo shoot. The day after our vow renewal we met up with our photographers at their home, grabbed our things and drove to the Fiji Surf boat launch area. We were greeted by the crew and jumped aboard to head out for a photo shoot in the ocean. Although it was windy and bumpy we all had a blast! But we quickly realized that Blake forgot his pants back at the house (he was only wearing his swimsuit)! We asked the driver of the boat if we could borrow his shorts for the session, and thankfully, he said yes.

How difficult was it to swim in your wedding dress? You made it look easy! Once we got our swimming faces on, we jumped in the clear blue, beautiful Fijian waters and it was so incredibly amazing…a time I will never forget. Although my face may not show it in some pictures, I assure you, this photo session was the most memorable and inspiring moment of my entire life! Despite my dress being extremely heavy, Malia, Stu and Blake always knew what to say to make me laugh, to put me at ease and to keep me motivated to take more pictures. Luckily, there was a reef that made it a little easier in the water too.

Your bouquet was simple and beautiful. It was bright red ginger that was tied with Magimagi, a Fijian rope that is made from woven coconut husk. Our trip to Fiji was filled with unbelievable memories, that we will cherish for a lifetime. We will forever hold Fiji and the Fijian people close to our hearts, and we can truly say, it is the most beautiful and friendliest country in the world. We can’t wait to return.
