When Makella laid eyes on her first black sand beach (a photo of Hana's Wai'anapanapa state beach), she fell in love. It was the same feeling she had when she first met Storm, her future husband, when she walked into the Vans shoe store where he worked. "I pushed for a date," she laughs. He agreed. "We went out the very next night and we've been together ever since."

She was committed to a ceremony on Maui's volcanic black sand beach, but it was impossible to shake the desire for a timeless, elegant wedding.  With decoration rendered irrelevant by the pristine, natural landscape, Makella focused on their attire. Storm's royal blue Calvin Klein suit mirrored the depths of the Pacific Ocean below; Makella wore a vintage-inspired Jenny Packham design and a bright plum statement lip color.

And that Vans store Makella walked into at the beginning of it all? When word got out that the two were eloping on Maui, Storm's company offered the newlyweds a chance to stay permanently. The couple said yes, packed and sold everything they needed for the new adventure and flew to the island for good. Once a location to escape to for their small, coastal wedding ceremony, Hawaii is now the place they call home.
