DIY: Keepsake Cards

Designer Conn Brattain's D.I.Y Project

Many couples are lending their personal style and creative touch to the myriad details of their event with an independent DIY approach. This memorable project is shared by designer Conn Brattain, winner of the Love Notes DIY Contest.

There are so many different ways to say "thank you". A momentous occasion calls for timeless personalized stationery to convey your sentiment, particularly in today's popular mode of electronic communication. There is still nothing better than receiving a piece of good old-fashioned mail, especially when it is something made by hand. I like to make my cards with and without text on the front, but I think it is nice to leave the front blank at times. In the following examples, the recipient will be able to display your beautifully handmade card in a frame for everyone to admire. Your recipient will also always be pleasantly reminded of your thoughtfulness for years to come.

For this project you will need the following supplies: a blank card (3.5" x 5" used in the photo), a pencil, an eraser and a craft Knife. Here are the simple instructions:

1. Open card and lay it flat with inside face up. Lightly draw the desired pattern onto inside front of card.
2. Once the desired pattern is achieved, very carefully cut into the pattern. For the petals, simple slices can be made. For the stems and leaf veins, you can actually remove very thin sections of paper to create a thicker line.
3. Once you have cut all the lines, keep the card face down and lightly erase any pencil marks.
4. Gently push the petals and leaves through from the back side making sure not to bend them. You may need to go back and cut the points to create a
clean release point.
5. Turn the card around so that the front is now facing you. Gently lift or pull the petals and leaves toward you slightly, until the desired effect is achieved.
6. Write your greeting inside and send your card off to a very lucky recipient!
