Transforming Your Wedding Reception Space

Photography by David Murphey and Kara Matsunaga

Transforming a space, whether a grand ballroom at an ultraluxe resort or a rustic barn in Wine Country, is one of the more exciting challenges of a wedding. Since the butterfly is the very symbol of transformation, we felt it befitting to conceive a magical setting centered on this wondrous creation.

Beginning with a glass dining table, literally a blank white canvas, floral designer Fong Tagawa used her modern sensibilities to balance what she envisioned as, “...a fantasy scene of butterflies fluttering above the table.” She was looking for the “wow factor”— that awestruck feeling when guests first arrive at a wedding reception. The romance of red defined the color palette for Fong's dramatic vision. She selected roses, both Bacara and Black Magic, in shades ranging from deep burgundy to ruby red that would serve as a floral runner spanning the length of the pearl white tabletop. Velvety roses nestled in acrylic trays create a natural frame for floating candles glowing in the center of each arrangement.

In addition to the red butterflies, Fong incorporated an element of nature in the contemporary setting by suspending a manzanita branch above the table, a surreal touch to the fantastic scene. Hundreds of butterflies mixed with gloriosa lilies, roses and crystals create a magnificent canopy of shimmery red, with the gloriosa blossoms mimicking the graceful shape of the butterflies dancing above the table.

As planned, each and every detail combine to create a visual impact defined by romance. Ceci New York's letterpress stationery echoes the rich palette and floral design. Scarlet martinis made with PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur are each accented with a single gloriosa. The square pattern of the floral arrangements is repeated in the modern shape of the leather chairs and the china, complemented by a white linen napkin simply folded and tied with red dupioni silk ribbon. Red favor boxes edged in black and tied with silk ribbon express the newlywed's gratitude with a touching sentiment, “Je t'aime”. These favors are part of a collection from Midori, who offers an amazing array of ribbons and boxes. And if you look closely at the butterflies, the word “love” is inscribed on the wings with a touch of glitter!

Fong created the bridal bouquet of cinnabar calla lilies bound with satin cording. And for dessert, nothing but red velvet will do. Decadent Cake Couture cupcakes are tucked inside pretty butterfly holders from paperorchidstationery.com and presented on a white platter. The sumptuous motif completely transforms the space with attention to the myriad details, setting the stage for a joyous and memorable evening
