Still Life Bouquets

Florists Bring the Paintings of Seventeenth-Century Dutch Masters to Life

Florists have long been inspired by still life paintings of seventeenth-century Dutch Masters, who depicted abundant fruit and flower arrangements at the peak of their natural beauty. In this feature we consulted notable artwork, from history to contemporary times, to create bouquets that marry timeless romance and modern styling.

Yvonne Chapman interpreted Georgia O'Keefe's 1928 painting, Oriental Poppies, with the pretty bouquet featured on this page. Delicate translucent petals in vivid coral hues are natural works of art, with brilliant splashes of yellow at each flower's center.

Floral artist Evan Morita was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's classic painting, Sunflowers. Known for his impeccable styling, Morita blended spiky green sunflowers and brilliant solid aster, expertly accented with burnt Oak Nile reeds tied with raffia. Van Gogh's original painting, likely the most famous of all sunflowers in art, portrays a simple parable about the brevity of life, with each blossom representing varying stages in the life cycle, from withered and wilting to vibrant full bloom.

Maui artist Kari McCarthy's contemporary painting, Poppies at Giverny, inspired this unique bouquet by Evan Morita. Layers of vivid Icelandic poppies and the fascinating texture of unopened blooms are punctuated with croton leaves. Red coral and fire birch branches add exotic detail.

Yvonne Chapman's bouquet is a masterful copy of Marc Chagall's, Original Bouquet. The grand scale, asymmetrical shape, and contrasting colors beautifully portray the artist's aesthetic. Ivory hydrangea, pink spray roses, red gerbera daisies, red and orange hybrid ranunculus, and orange freesia are tied with satin and a band of feathery cording, bearing Yvonne's inimitable flair for the unexpected.

Yvonne Chapman brought Henri Matisse's painting Anemones to life with this cheerful bouquet of crimson and fuchsia aneomones from Holland.
