Love Never Fails: A Classic Wedding on Oahu

A Real Wedding at Central Union Church: Oahu

Photography by Chrissy Lambert

Dane and Joanne exchanged wedding vows in front of 350 guests in a beautiful ceremony at Central Union Church in Honolulu on the island of Oahu.“Central Union Church has always represented such elegance and strong tradition for me growing up,” Joanne says. When the couple met with the wedding director at the church, they were pleasantly surprised to find that she had played a significant role in Joanne’s preschool years, making the experience that much more meaningful and personal.

Joanne, who plans corporate events as a career, knew she wanted to take on the creative direction in arranging every detail of her wedding. From the Kate Spade-inspired invitations to the modern pink and red rose centerpieces, their wedding was edgy and at once classic. Joanne worked very closely with Jennifer Chong at Kinohi Designs to create the perfect wedding invitations. “We searched through so many different variations, but not a single one stood out to me. I began to comb through my fashion magazines for inspiration and came across Kate Spade’s polka dot handbag,” she recalls. That pattern served as an inspiration for all of the elements that followed from the place cards to the guest book. “The real punch in the overall look was when a friend recommended that I add subtle hints of hot pink. It was the perfect touch! ” she says.

Evan Morita of Florist Grand transformed the church with his splendid floral displays. Ruby-red roses tied with silk ribbon were poised at each pew and led to an altar where an extravagant arrangement of hundreds of roses stood above the couple as they exchanged vows. The bride wore an elegant ivory Pronovias gown in Mikado and Milano silk satin. Joanne gave the talented florist free reign to create a bouquet that matched her rich color palette. “I completely surprise me with my bouquet and I was impressed that he selected lilies of the valley. It added a classic touch.” she says.

Joanne found photographer Chrissy Lambert quite literally in the pages of Pacific Rim WEDDINGS. Combing through her collection of the magazines, she ingeniously placed a tag on each one of the pictures that stood out in her mind. “At the end, I realized that all of the tagged photos were Chrissy Lambert's! Her images are stylish and artsy, yet still have a classic look,” she says.

Upon arriving at the historic Royal Hawaiian Hotel, guests enjoyed pupus (Hawaiian appetizers) and cocktails while the newlyweds joined their immediate families for a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. The happy couple poured tea for their elders in exchange for a tiny red envelope, a licee, as a wish for good luck. The Royal Monarch room was adorned with flickering candlelight and romantic red hues creating a majestic ambience. Tables were graced with burgundy linens and modern floral arrangements in tall glass vases.

In keeping with family tradition, Joanne’s auntie baked 1,000 sesame cookies that were neatly packaged in white boxes and decorated with a rose for each of the guests. After savoring rich vanilla ice cream in a macadamia nut caramel basket, celebrants enjoyed a performance by legendary singer Anita Hall.

“The highlight of the entire evening was hearing the intimate speeches from our loved ones that touched upon every aspect of our lives together—from preschool into our young adult years,” she says. “It was simply perfect!”
