Rolin Basna and Jason Matthew Dar Mun Ching's diverse backgrounds resulted in an attendance of nearly 200 friends at the Central Union Church in Honolulu, from as far away as the Middle East, the Caribbean, New York, and Chicago. One particular guest delighted all of the celebrants.
On the evening before the wedding, the groom’s parents hosted an intimate rehearsal dinner at the Oah‘u Country Club in Waikiki. The couple presented gifts to their parents, digital cameras for their fathers and Swarovski crystal necklaces for their mothers. Each grandparent was honored with champagne flutes etched with plumeria flowers. Rolin’s bridesmaids received delicate jewelry boxes, while the groomsmen were gifted sterling silver cuff links to pair with their black tuxedos.
March 17, 2007 arrived with not a single cloud in the sky. The day began with a Catholic mass followed by a reception at the elegant Halekulani Hotel along Waikiki Beach. Upon entering Central Union Church in Honolulu, the couple read the message, “Love Never Faileth” etched above the altar and felt it was the perfect place to exchange their vows. Rolin was a gorgeous bride in a Justina McCaffrey couture gown from Kleinfeld Bridal in Manhattan. Her bridesmaids donned turquoise tea-length dresses to fittingly render the shade of the Pacific Ocean. The groom was just as dashing in a crisp Calvin Klein tux. The couple’s vision for a multicultural event steeped in family tradition and island elegance was realized with ease. “We wanted to incorporate the natural beauty of Hawai‘i into our celebration,” Rolin says. “Every time I visit the islands, I notice the abundant flowers all around.” Evan Morita of Florist Grand created vibrant arrangements of red anthuriums, pink pin cushions, green cymbidium orchids, and burnt orange calla lilies and roses. The tall centerpieces added just the right punch of color to the distinguished dining room. Chic invitations by Savvy Designs complemented the tropical color palette.
A fabulous selection of hors d‘oeuvres ranging from suckling pig to lomi lomi salmon was displayed throughout the
reception. The party feasted on a main course of local delicacies, including sautéed mahi mahi and fresh sashimi. Festive Arabic music played throughout the evening to honor the bride’s ancestry. As a special tribute to the groom's family, theatrical Chinese lions danced through the crowd as a gesture of good luck, wealth, and happiness for the newlyweds. The night was capped with a sweet indulgence of rich buttercream cake topped with decadent chocolates.
The next morning, the newlyweds jetted off to Australia to travel the Pacific Coast for their two-week honeymoon. Basking in the memories of their special day gave them the perfect excuse to return to Hawai‘i on their way home.
