A Destination Wedding on Kauai

A Kama'aina Wedding on the Garden Isle

Photography by Eugene Kam

Lillian Masamitsu and Jay Kam decided to get married on Kauai at The Princeville Kauai resort on Hanalei Bay, instead of their home in Honolulu. The twenty minute flight to the island known as the "Garden Isle" allowed their guests the luxury of a brief getaway. "We wanted this to be a relaxing vacation for everyone," said Lillian. "We didn't want people to have to worry about picking up the kids or getting up for work the next day. We all had a fun weekend away from home."

The Princeville Kauai resort on Hanalei Bay with its dramatic views of verdant mountains and turquoise blue ocean provided the ideal setting for their beach wedding. Bamboo topiaries of white dendrobium orchids and dahlias created a stunning backdrop that complemented the island's natural beauty. Lillian's sister Janet was a stunning matron of honor in an Armani sheath. Jay's Auntie Helen sang the Hawaiian Wedding Song and, as the blue skies of Hawaii shone, Lillian walked down the aisle accompanied by both her parents. Her magnificent Anne Namba gown sparkled with thousands of white and ivory colored beads stitched in a flowing crane pattern.

After exchanging vows, Lillian and Jay and their most intimate friends and family held a traditional Chinese tea ceremony to honor their family heritage. In keeping with the festivities, Lillian wore her new mother-in-law's intricately embroidered Chinese jacket over her wedding gown. Tea, delicious desserts, and heartfelt wishes for a happy life circulated. The celebration continued in a less traditional fashion when all 50 guests and the new couple met later that day for a dip in the pool. Everyone gathered around the lagoon bar—literally in the middle of the swimming pool—and raised their mai tais in a toast to the newlyweds. For Lillian and Jay, a 20 year vintage friendship has become a marriage that, like a rare wine, will only improve with age.
